AI-Based Training for Investigative Interviewing

Play Video

Welcome to EchoMind

EchoMind* is an avatar-based investigative interview training platform, and this next generation training solution is set to transform the global law enforcement learning environment.

EchoMind creates diverse AI interview simulations in which interviewers engage with AI-powered personas (avatars). Within these simulated, realistic interview scenarios, interviewers can practice and enhance their interviewing skills. As their skills develop from trainee to experienced interviewer, scenarios also advance in complexity.

EchoMind draws on OSACO’s 30+ years of real-world policing and law enforcement interview expertise, and is backed by academic research. The result is an interactive, progressive and continuous learning experience that is proven to deliver consistently more effective interviews (75-80%) than traditional training.

Overcoming the limitations of traditional training

Effective interviewing is at the heart of any investigation. It requires vital interview skills such as rapport building and use of open questions to elicit accurate information and evidential material. It must be delivered through a robust and ethical process, and interviewers may have to simultaneously navigate cultural sensitivities, language barriers and the emotional or psychological state of interviewees.

These are complex skills; they must be learned and practiced.

However, the current global model of investigative interview training does not adequately support learning and practicing.

The traditional classroom-based lesson/instructor/roleplay model has not changed in 20-30 years and produces only an estimated 30% improvement rate.

This method of training is further limited by time constraints, cost and lack of specific/personalised feedback which hinders continual development and improvement.

The Solution is EchoMind

EchoMind utilises next generation LLM AI technology to transforms the classroom experience into a realistic, immersive interview simulation in an online training environment. It enables the creation of diverse interview scenarios in which interviewers can practice using different scenarios , thereby developing effective questioning, rapport and interaction techniques.

Because EchoMind is accessible online, at any time, it allows interviewers to repeat, practice and learn.

How does EchoMind work?

EchoMind draws on AI’s ability to quickly gather and provide information to create diverse interview simulations which are not scripted, or linear.

Because EchoMind incorporates emotional, multilingual and cultural nuances, the immersive simulations it creates are highly realistic.

A traffic light system and visual cues from the avatars offer real-time feedback, complemented by an end-of session feedback summary specific to the interviewer.

These multiple layers enable interviewers to understand the effectiveness of their approach, and make real-time adjustments to enhance rapport, ask open-ended questions (proven to be most effective) and obtain relevant evidential material.

EchoMind offers the ability to generate a broad range of scenarios (different interview scenarios for witness, victim or suspect) and avatars representing different people (ages, genders, cultures) with minimal setup.

EchoMind incorporates the principles of both the PEACE and ORBIT models, two of the most widely used and respected investigative interviewing models in the world.

Integrated Interviewing Models

EchoMind offers an integrated and comprehensive opportunity to master more effective interviewing technique by incorporating the principles of both the PEACE (Preparation and Planning; Engage and Explain; Account (Clarify and Challenge); Closure; and Evaluation), and ORBIT (Observing Rapport-Based Interpersonal Techniques) models, two of the most widely used and respected investigative interviewing models in the world.

PEACE lays the foundations for effective and ethical investigations, utilising rapport-building and open-ended questioning, whilst ORBIT supports the application of rapport-based interviewing and the way in which interpersonal awareness can influence disclosure.

Proven by Research

EchoMind is based on academic research by our research partners at New York University (NYU) which proves that avatar-based training:

  • allows interviewers to practice the non-suggestive, open-ended questioning that provides increased accuracy in witness statements
  • improves rapport-building skills
  • provides feedback, which is proven to significantly enhance interview quality and
  • enables learning that is proven to be transferable to real world situations.

Dr Pekka Santtila’s research at NYU further demonstrates that before training with avatars, participants (whether new or professional interviewers) use about 35% open-ended questions; after one-hour of training with avatars (four interviews with feedback), this dramatically increased to 80%. In short, participants more than doubled their use of open questions.

Research-Informed, Cutting Edge Technology

Powered by Large Language Models (LLM) Technology

EchoMind is based on the latest generation of Large Language Model (LLM) technology.  LLM-based avatars can:

  • generate a broad range of scenarios with minimal setup
  • provide multilingual capabilities and
  • incorporate emotional expressions.

This means that EchoMind can effectively mimic interviewing real people with real concerns. Within any scenario there are multiple possible responses, allowing different answers and outcomes.

This differentiates it from mechanised AI formats like chatbots, which act as information gatherers and disbursers, and can only provide pre-programmed answers to set questions.

How is it different to a Chatbot?

Chatbots supply predefined responses within predefined scenarios, whereas the LLM technology used in EchoMind can generate a broad range of scenarios, avatars, languages, emotions and responses.
